Chinnar is Kerala’s answer to dry-forest wilderness — thorny scrub and deciduous woodland that couldn’t look more different from the cloud forests further up the ghats. It’s one of the few places in the state to spot the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel and the Indian Star Tortoise, and guided treks along the Pambar River lead through territory shared with elephants, leopards, and spotted deer. For travellers looking to combine a Munnar trip with something genuinely off the usual circuit, a half-day or overnight trek into Chinnar is hard to match.
